Work is progressing well in the reconstruction of the main Council Circle at WVU Jackson’s Mill. The project was much more than just replacing some boards. The new Council Circle will have a complete concrete foundation, new seating areas, drainage, totem poles, council rock and so forth.
It was important to current and past users to retain the Council Circle’s natural look and feel while incorporating new technologies to ensure a safe, sturdy and long lasting location. As with most any project at the Mill, there must be a balance between the history of the facility, current and future needs, and incorporating new construction technologies.
The new Council Circle will be located in the same place as the old one, and will look very similar. The main differences will be the concrete foundation; thicker and more durable participant benches, treated with colored wood stain for a more natural look; additional visitor benches to provide more seating for guests who attend camp programs; and a handicap accessible ramp. There will also be additional steps, lighting, and railings.
Once the project is finished, the new Council Circle should require less maintenance than the previous one. While outdoor structures require regular care and maintenance, the new design should allow for easier upkeep than its predecessor.
The Council Circle Challenge one of the pieces of the overall Council Circle fundraising goal has raised a little over $50,000 since last fall. This includes gifts from close to 450 different donors, including individuals, families, corporations, foundations, and associations.
The original goal for the Challenge was $25,000. As we’ve doubled that, the goal has been increased to $100,000. Donations are still being accepted you can contact Brent Clark (Brent.Clark@mail.wvu.edu; 304-293-8622) if you’d like to contribute.
Work is expected to be completed by June 15, with the dedication tentatively planned to take place during Older Members Conference.
